Zanaflex relaxes the tense, rigid muscles caused by spasticity. It is prescribed for people with multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, and other disorders that produce protracted muscles spasms. The effect of the drug peaks 1 to 2 hours after each dose and is gone within 3 to 6 hours, so it’s best to schedule doses for shortly before the daily activities when relief of spasticity is most important.

How Taken:
Take Zanaflex exactly as directed. The danger of side effects increases with the size of the dose. Zanaflex comes as a tablet to take it orally. It usually is taken two or three times a day. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand and follow the directions on your prescription label carefully.

Warnings Precautions:
Researchers have little information on the long-term consequences of using Zanaflex in single doses of more than 8 milligrams, or in total amounts of more than 24 milligrams a day. If you require a higher dosage, previously unrecognized side effects could possibly appear. Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, have kidney disease, have low blood pressure or you are on medication to treat high blood pressure; or you are taking birth control pills. During treatment you may not be able to take Zanaflex, or you may require a lower dose or special monitoring if you have any of the conditions listed above. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant. It is not known whether Zanaflex will harm an unborn baby. Do not take Zanaflex without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. It is not known whether Zanaflex passes into breast milk.

Missed Dose:
Doses should be taken only as needed. Allow 6 to 8 hours between doses. Take no more than 3 a day. Never double the dose.

Side Effects:
Oral contraceptives tend to boost the amount of Zanaflex in the system. If you are using an oral contraceptive, you'll probably need a smaller dose of Zanaflex. Alcohol, or any drug that slows the nervous system (including other drugs taken for spasticity), increases the likelihood of drowsiness when taken with Zanaflex. Side effects from Zanaflex can occur. If you experience either of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately: yellowing of the skin or eyes, unexplained flu-like symptoms. Also you should tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away: dizziness, upset stomach, vomiting, tingling sensation in the arms, legs, hands, and feet, dry mouth, increased muscle spasms.

Storage:
Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication. Store at room temperature. Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Overdose:
Symptoms of a Zanaflex overdose are not well known but include unconsciousness and irregular breathing. Seek emergency medical attention.

More Information:
Use caution with alcohol, other muscle relaxants, sleep or anxiety medicines, and pain medicines. Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Zanaflex may cause drowsiness and dizziness. If you experience drowsiness or dizziness, avoid these activities. Dizziness is most likely to occur when you rise from a sitting or lying position. Rise slowly to prevent dizziness and a possible fall. These drugs may increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking Zanaflex. Without first talking to your doctor or pharmacist do not take any other medicine during treatment with Zanaflex.
